Basilio Moreno Jr., known to his friends as “Richard,” went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 8, 2020, at the age of 74 years. His battle with medical issues in recent years showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, he came out a hero and stayed strong until the end. He passed away with his family by his side and memories with him will always be cherished.
He was born to Anita and Basilio Moreno Sr. on December 25, 1945 in Freeport, Texas. He had five sisters, Carmen Canales (Ruben), Elenore Fernandez, Rosa McDonald (Raymond), Geneva Ortiz (Lupe), Carolina Damian (Jerry), and three brothers, Abel, Rudy (Sulema), and Robert (Carolyn).
While attending Brazosport High School, he met the love of his life, Rebeca Moreno. After graduating from Brazosport High School, he enlisted with the United States Air Force to serve his country.
When he returned from the service, he and Rebeca began their life together on May 4, 1966. In their 54 years of marriage, they built an amazing life together. Some of their favorite things to do together were dancing, taking trips, and spending time with family. They had three sons, Samuel, Miguel, and Cristoval.
Richard knew the value of hard work. He had a long career at BASF, and he retired after 32 years.
He had many passions in his life; traveling, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, the beach, his faith, and his family. Anyone who knew him knew that he would give the shirt off his back to help others. He was always serving others and making sure that everyone was taken care of.
His faith was important to him, and he enjoyed serving his church, St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. He became an altar server in April 1959 at St. Henry’s Catholic Church. In 2007, he completed his training to become an acolyte.
One of his greatest joys was being a grandfather. He loved spending time cheering on his grandchildren at their various sporting events and performances. He spoiled them by taking them on vacations and trips and giving them memories that they will always cherish. He shared his love of the beach with them, and he was always asking to take a drive down to see what was going on at the beach.
Richard will be missed by his wife of 54 years, Rebeca; children, Samuel (Mary), Miguel (Kim), and Cristoval (Sonya); grandchildren, Ashley (Nick), Andrew (Hannah), Samuel Miguel, Joshua, Cristian (Abby), Austin (Jamie), Jonathan, Michael, and Mathew; great-grandchildren, Alexander Kaylan Robert Moreno, Charley Rebecca Rice, Austin Steven Moreno Jr. and Nora Jean Moreno; and numerous other family members and friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Anita and Basilio Sr.; and brothers Abel and Rudy.
A wake will be held on Thursday, November 12, at 6:00 p.m. at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1019 W 6th St. Freeport, Texas, with a rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m.
A mass will be held in memory of Basilio on Friday, November 13, at 9:30 a.m., at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. A graveside service will follow at Angleton Cemetery.
