Gina Vela, age 60, of Freeport, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 28, 2020 in her home. She was born August 10, 1960 in Freeport to the late Fernando M. Vela and Jane Marquez. She attended Brazosport High School and then went off to study business at MTI Business School. Gina truly lived life to the fullest. Gina enjoyed music, dancing, reading her bible, spending time with her daughters, taking her grandchildren to the beach and rooting for them at baseball, softball and football games. She was the one in the front row clapping and cheering the loudest. Gina was one of the kindest people you could ever meet. Gina had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. She opened her heart and her home to many children over the years and she will be sorely missed. But what most resonates is the close relationship she had with her siblings. They were inseparable. They would, attend mass together, enjoy mani/pedi’s, stay up late watching movies, and enjoyed the last-minute weekend getaways. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for them. She is survived by her daughters Janice Garcia (Jose) and Christina Zarate (Aaron), siblings Brenda Evans (Robin), Blanca Buras (Thomas), Joseph Vela (Donovan), Pamela Vela, Santa Blanco and Fernando Vela Jr. Grandchildren; David Jr., Titduas (Alissa) and Josiah Luera, Jenna Vela, Aaron Jr. & Jay Eli Zarate and one great grandchild Lorenzo Luera and numerous nieces and nephews. Gina is preceded in death by her loving companion, John McClaggen, sister, Maria Luiz Vela. Gina’s love for her family was undeniable, and will leave a hole in all of our hearts. Her favorite bible verse John 3:16.
Pallbearers will be Justin Vela, Thomas J. Buras II, Isiah Buras, Nicolas Obando, Aaron Zarate, Jose Garcia, David Luera Jr. and Titduas Luera. Honorary pallbearers Joseph Vela, Robin Evans, and Josiah Luera.
