Elvie Evon Sydow (née Etheridge), aged 85, passed away on July 18, 2024, in Clute, Texas. Born on September 4, 1938, in Weldon, Texas, she was a cherished figure in her community and a beacon of love and support to her family.
Evon dedicated her life to nurturing her family and enriching the lives of those around her. Her love for her husband, Reginald Garland Sydow, whom she precedes in death, was paralleled only by her devotion to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Pamela Kay Sydow Steel (Douglas), Larry Neal Sydow (Kathy), Garland Douglas Sydow (Andrea), and Marcus Wayne Sydow (Kim). Evon was a proud grandmother to Russell Wayne Lopez, Carrie Evon Steel Zavala, Leah Michelle Curran, Bronson Wayne Sydow, Harrison Pate Sydow, Colby Neal Sydow, and Marcus Don Sydow; and a great-grandmother to Rylie Brook Russell, Gabriel Evan Zavala, Kayla Grace Zavala, Karis Paige Russell, Preslie Adysen Russell, and Carter Douglas Russell. She was preceded in death by her parents, Douglas and Lois Etheridge; her daughter Cindy Lynne Sydow; and granddaughter Casey Machelle Steel.
Evon’s generous spirit extended beyond her family. She was an active member of the Temple Baptist Church in Clute for over fifty years, where her faith and fellowship were an integral part of her life. Professionally, Evon retired from the Brazosport Independent School District (BISD), having previously worked at Brockmans and owned her own business, Evon’s Sewing Shop.
Her passions included camping, motorcycle trips, and attending bluegrass festivals. She had a profound love for animals, especially dogs, a trait she inherited from her father. Evon was also known for her culinary skills, particularly during family gatherings, which she cherished deeply.
Evon’s life will be celebrated at Stroud Funeral Home in Clute, Texas, with visitation on Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:00 a.m., followed by a gravesite service at 4:00 p.m. in Lovelady, TX.
