Kay Francis (Dotson) Sommerlatte was born on April 26, 1941, in Caldwell, Texas to Hubert and Frances Dotson. Kay passed away at her Lake Jackson home of 52 years on September 3, 2026, with her loving children by her side.
Kay is preceded in death by her husband Forrest “Woody” Sommerlatte, her grandson Forrest James Howard, parents Hubert and Frances Dotson, brother James Dotson, sister Dorothy Donath and husband, Orvil, and dearest friends Dorothy and Howard McNair. She is survived by her beloved children Vernon Scott Sommerlatte, Janet Smith and husband Richard Smith, her cherished granddaughter Kayden Grace Howard, sister Laverne Ondrasek, sister Jane Eppner and husband Jerry, brother Edward Dotson and wife, Rita, and brother Ross Dotson. In addition, she is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children.
Kay met Forrest Sommerlatte in Austin, Texas in 1969. After a whirlwind romance, they married on July 26 of the same year. They moved to Angleton and eventually Lake Jackson where they raised their children.
Kay was known for her humor, gentle wisdom, pie crust and most notably her skills as a seamstress, sewing Red Devil Cheer Uniforms, Brazoswood Belle Competition costumes, and Color Guard field uniforms. She could design, sew, and alter clothing so that everything fit just right. A Scout Den Mother, teacher at Boggs Nursery School, volunteer at Ney Elementary, substitute teacher at many Brazosport Schools, Kay Sommerlatte was a great supporter of the children in her community. She was everyone’s mother; her children and friends would often find themselves around the dining table being advised, entertained, and most importantly loved. The door was always open.
Her most important role was Nanny K! Her granddaughter Kayden Grace was born prematurely and unable to attend any day care for her first 2 years. Kay moved into the room next to Kayden and provided the most amazing love and care that could ever be asked for. Not only did she provide care for Kayden, but her parents as well. She truly was the best Nanny one could pray for. Nanny K became her name to all who love her and Kayden.
Her health declined in her last years, but her children took care of her, ensuring she could be in her home. She was also looked after by her grand dog Teque, who loved to curl up in the chair next to her. Her dear friends Marie, Diana, and Carol also checked in with much appreciated visits. Special thanks to the IPH hospice team, especially Jessica, Taylor and Karey for loving and caring for her during her last months. Peace is found in the promises of God for all believers.
